SOCIAL SAFEWAY

Wisconsin Avenue at 34th Street NW

Safeway has strong roots in the Georgetown community. Safeway began serving Washington DC by acquiring the Sanitary Grocery Company nearly 80 years ago. Safeway operated the Georgetown Sanitary Grocery for many years before it changed the banner to Safeway.  Approximately, twenty years later, Safeway opened its first store on Wisconsin Avenue. Since then we have gone through several changes in an effort to improve the services provided to our customers. Once again, we believe it is time to reinvest in Georgetown to make the Social Safeway an even better place to shop.

Safeway gathering placeMany people often ask why the store located in Georgetown is dubbed the “Social Safeway.” While most of the Safeway locations in the District of Columbia have a nickname, the “Social Safeway” means a lot of things to a lot of people. It earned its reputation as a social gathering place for people in the Georgetown community. With the new plans for the redevelopment of the store, this will only enhance its reputation as the place to be and be seen.
